Cupping Therapy in Perth CBD

Before Michael Phelps showed up in the pool with visible circles marks on his back, no one really knew much about cupping. Known as an ancient, traditional Chinese medicine, cupping has been around for thousands of years and used by people all over the world to promote improved wellness. It is a form of treatment in which therapists use special cups to release tension in the soft tissues of the body.

At Perth City Massage, we’re happy to offer this modality as a treatment to patients that works well in addition to chiropractic care or on its own.

How Does Cupping Work?

Cupping utilizes suction and negative pressure to release the muscles and fascia (connective tissue) in the body, it encourages blood flow and sedates the nervous system (which makes it an excellent treatment for high blood pressure). Cupping is used to relieve back and neck pain, stiff muscles, anxiety, fatigue, migraines, rheumatism, and even cellulite.

This negative pressure is the opposite of a deep tissue massage – a pulling versus a pushing effect.
The suction increases blood flow to the area, which, in turn, reduces muscle tension and inflammation, and promotes healing. Recent studies have shown cupping’s effectiveness in reducing pain intensity and providing positive short-term benefits.

Just to dispel a myth, many say that cupping is painful, but this is highly dependent on the individual; the level of inflammation they are experiencing, and on the technique that is used. In fact, most people find the sensation very pleasant and describe it as feeling a sort of release, our patients often leave feeling much better than when they arrived.

The cups can remain in position for several minutes (thus leaving those prominent circular marks).

Other techniques such as gliding them over the skin or strategically placing the cups on fascial lines and pulling to create a stretching sensation are less likely to irritate the skin. If marks shall occur, they will usually disappear in a week.

When should I have cupping?

Cupping can be done as often as two times per week. Some patients come in for weekly cupping sessions for stress or tension relief and find it very effective when used in conjunction with Remedial Massage to assist in muscular recovery and other conditions mentioned above.

Cupping also promotes relaxation of the muscles and skin, improves blood circulation, begins the healing and regeneration process, and reduces inflammation.
